Bridging between art and local culture is Grenada’s performing arts trademark.

In accordance with that spirit, St. George’s based Heritage Theatre Company made its mission “To be an instrument for creativity and a medium for entertainment, education and social development in Grenada.” Based on though research into their cultural heritage, this company has staged a repertoire of 25 full length plays and 11 comedies. Directed by Christopher De Riggs, who has also written many of the plays, the company has performed in the Caribbean islands (Aruba, Barbados, Trinidad, St Vincent), Miami and New York City and participated in Caribbean Festival of the Arts in 1995 and recently in the Caribbean Theatre Festival where they staged “Man for the South.” For further information, check out their website at http://www.spiceisle.com/heritagethea... .

Committed to their African and Amerindian roots the Tivoli Drummers and the Birchgrove and River Sallee Lancers are other present attempts of artists at coming into terms with the pre and post colonial past of this country.

And the best known calypso, reggae and jazz masters have also worked on that dialogue between their native culture and art forms. Calypso best known artist, Slinger Francisco also called The Mighty Sparrow, Grenada’s Reggae most famous musician, David Emmanuel and jazz master Kingsley Etienne have taken that interaction to the international music scene.
