Some small towns become famous by doing one thing and doing it well. Las Vegas has its gambling. Woodstock has its semi bi-decade rock concert. There is a place in Maine that “does” blueberries, and a place in Massachusetts that “does” cranberries. For Gros Islet, the thing they have become famous for is their Friday night “Jump-up” party.
The Jump-up is no ordinary party. Tourists are attracted to it like moths are to a flame / light bulb. Multiple city blocks are closed to car traffic. Barbecue grills and beer materialize in the streets as if by magic. And then music starts to blare from hidden speakers, causing the throng of tourists to, well, jump up and dance. Music is of the R&B slash reggae slash calypso variety, which goes perfectly with the beauty of this small fishing village.
