Bourton-on-the-Water is a delightful Cotswold village. Also known as “The Venice of England,” Bourton-on-the-Water sits on the River Windrush. It is a small village with plenty to see and do. It draws so many visitors and offers so many activities and attractions that it has a more cosmopolitan atmosphere than do other more laid-back villages. It is very family-friendly, and the attractions appeal to all ages.
Stroll over one of the low bridges over the river and take time to watch the crystal clear river run just beneath your feet. There are trees and wide lawns along the sides of the river, and kids will have a fine time playing along the riverbanks.
The most unusual attraction is
The Model Village
(Rissington Road, behind the Old New Inn). This is a tiny Bourton-on-the-Water – a replica model village 1/9th the size of the actual town. Inside the Model Village, take a look at the spot in town where the Model Village sits, and you’ll find another Model Village, about 1/100th the size of the real village. (Admission Adults: £2.75, Children: £2.)
Birdland Park and Gardens
(Rissington Road) is a seven-acre park where you can see over 500 birds – it holds a variety of unusual birds, including flamingos, penguins, pelicans and storks.
Dragonfly Maze
(Rissington Road) is an entertaining maze for the whole family. With over a quarter-mile of pathways, you can search for the secret hiding place of the Golden Dragonfly.
Bourton Model Railway and Toy Shop
is housed in an old farmhouse. It is a delightful attraction for the whole family. Train enthusiasts of all ages will watch in wonder as the model railroads move through over 500 square feet of track and scenery.
Cotswold Motor Museum
(Sherborn Street) has about 20 antique cars and motorcycles, as well as many other pieces of memorabilia from the early 20th century.
Cotswold Perfumery
is a “must do” for those who can appreciate the skill and artistry it takes to develop and produce an attractive fragrance. John Stephen, the owner and perfumer, jokes that his work is to "stick my business into other people's noses!" Take some time to sample the different fragrances – perhaps you’ll find your new signature scent.
The Cotswold Pottery
(Clapton Row) is a charming shop filled with hand-made ceramics. The pottery is all made in the on-site studio by the owners, John and Jude Jelfs.
