Si Ord opened Sandinista! in October 2002, inspired by his love of music and Central American Culture. The idea was to create a bar for ‘everyone’ in the city’s northern quarter.
Head Chef Greg Lewis and his team have helped Sandinista! become one of Leeds’ top dining destinations. With only the freshest ingredients used, the menu highlights include a Spanish Ploughman’s plate, and tapas like Jamaican Salt Fish Fritters or Albondigas (home-made meatballs), embodying Sandinista’s Latin inspired food ethos: simple yet very tasty. Almost 50% of the tapas menu is Gluten-free, and there is a selection of Fairtrade and organic soft drinks at the bar for those so inclined. The impressively stocked bar also offers an awesome array of cocktails and a great selection of world beers.
Sandinista! is laid-back and relaxed during the week, but has a real party atmosphere at the weekend, attracting clientele from all areas of Leeds. It’s basically about good food, good drink, good music, good people and a great time. The cantina style restaurant is a split-level haven of wood panelling, colour-washed walls and revolutionary iconography. With DJs from Thursday to Saturday, live music every Wednesday and Sunday, and a huge range of tastes catered for, it’s not hard to see why Sandinista! keeps on winning awards… just make sure you get there early or you’ll have to beat the crowds.
