There is plenty to do and see for sports enthusiasts visiting the French Riviera! Whether you're looking to be active or simply a spectator, you will find everything in the French Riviera from walking to jogging, swimming, sailing, scuba diving, tennis... and car races.
For starters, weather conditions and very well equipped marinas have made the Riviera the best coast for sailing in France. Port Vauban in Antibes has over 1,000 berths and, similar to Monte-Carlo's, the yachts housed here are fascinating to walk through... or just stare at. In most resorts and sailing clubs it is possible to rent a sail boat. Avid sailors will discover that the sailing season on the Riviera is packed with regattas. Check out the Voiles d'Antibes - Trophee Panerai. This is an international championship of classic yachts and each year it welcomes the world's most beautiful yachts built before the 1950s. This event is accompanied by exhibitions, concerts and coctail parties and it annually runs from May 31-June 4.
Scuba Diving is also a popular activity in the French Riviera. There are centers in St-Tropez, Ste-Maxime, St-Raphael, Cannes and Villefranche-sur-Mer. Check out the Federation Francaise d'Etudes et de Sports Sous-Marins, an umbrella organization for over 100 local clubs, for detailed information.
And when you're not on or in the water, you can go hiking through the hills, or walking through the many small towns of the Riviera. Try the water-edge walk from Beaulieu-sur-Mer to St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.
As for spectator sports, do not skip a visit to Monaco! You will not want to miss the
Monaco Grand Prix. If you don't have tickets to see the track directly, it is still worth the visit just to hear the sounds and feel the energy of such a massive event. The
Tennis Masters also takes place in Monte Carlo annually - it celebrated its 100th tennis tournament this year.
