Nightlife in Morocco suffers from the cultural taboo against drinking alcohol.  Alcohol sale and consumption is legal in Rabat, but plain-view display of the substance is not.  It is, therefore, against the law to tote a bottle in the streets outside of a bag, and all bars blind their windows.  Women who frequent them are considered hookers.

Still, there are plenty of bars at which Westerners fraternize over drinks, most of them located in hotels .  The best bars are in the five star joints, such as the Sofitel Diwan , the Rabat Hilton , the Golden Tulip, and La Tour Hassan .  Hamilton Traveler’s Bar at the Hilton is particularly pleasant, acclaimed for its selection of live music and entertainment offerings.  La Tour Hassan’s Le Pacha and La Champagnerie are also fine places to relax.

Non-alcoholic nightlife centers around cafes and disco-bars, the former along the Mohammed V and Allal Ben Abdallah avenues, the latter surrounding the Place de Melilla and the Rue Patric Lumumba.

Rabat is a unique city inasmuch as its nightlife thrives in spite of its being on the wagon.
