On foot:  It is possible to get around a majority of Tunis on foot.  Travelers often spend a significant portion of their time in the medina ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction... ), a location where walking is strongly recommended as the main means of transportation.

Public transportation:  Getting between neighborhoods ( http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g29... ) is best done via public transportation which is made up of a combination of light rail (metro), bus and train travel.  They are all inexpensive options which cover a large range of distance and make getting around easy.  Visitors should know that fares are more expensive at night that during the day.

By car:  For the most part, cars are not necessary in Tunis.  Travelers who rent cars are reminded that international driver’s licenses are required; they should be obtained as a part of the rental conditions.  Visitors should plan to be highly alert when driving as Tunis drivers are notoriously bad.

With a driver:   Travelers can hire taxis on the streets of Tunis with relative ease and safety.   Travelers can also opt to rent cars which include drivers as tour guides.   The latter is relatively inexpensive in terms of guided tours but is not by any means a necessity for getting around the area.
