The main Mauritius airport, officially known as Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport but more commonly called “Plaisance”, is located about 30 miles south-east of the capital, Port Louis. Air Mauritius, the national airline, offers flights extensively throughout Europe. Other carriers such as Air France and British Airways fly to Mauritius. All travelers must have a valid passport and return ticket to be accepted to Mauritius. A visa is also required for between 2 weeks to 1 month.

A taxi to the city will cost at least 1,200 rupees (about $42). These taxis have white registration plates with black figures and are metered. Another option is to take a bus from the round-about outside the airport across the island to the main city for around but plenty of buses pass the roundabout outside and will take you across the island for around Rs50 ($2). This trip takes from 45 minutes to two hours depending on traffic (Port Louis is renowned for intolerable traffic jams. The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority provides good information for these sorts of travel arrangements. In general, t he bus service all over the island is very good, with frequent departures and low fares.   One can rent a car if one is over 23 years of age and foreign licenses are accepted.

 A visa is not required for visitors from Eurpope, The USA, Canda, Aurstralia, New Zealand or Japan. You can stay for one month but if you want to stay for a further three months you have to ask for an extension and this process is very beauracratic.
