L’Aventure du Sucre
One museum that is a requisite to visit while in Port Louis is L’adventure du Sucre (the adventure of sugar). This museum is very modern and innovative, though built in the center of an old sugarmill from colonial times. In this museum, visitors garner a strong understanding of the sugar making process as well as the history of Mauritius. There is also a small boutique there that sells souveniers, local rum and sugar. The restaurant “Le Fangourin” offers fresh cuisine, a mix of French and Creole with a large selection of seafood. Though overall, it can be labeled as a tourist trap, it is good for those interested in Mauritius’s history.

The Natural History Museum is also a good museum to visit as it is the oldest museum in Mauritius and was originally part of the Desjardins Museum, which was opened in 1842. The museum shows birds, fishes, reptiles, butterflies, all representing local wildlife. The building itself, called the Mauritius Institute Building, was constructed form 1880 to 1884.

Meanwhile the Mauritius Postal Museum is located across from the Post office in an old stone building. The place used to be a Civil Hospital but recently was acknowledged as a national heritage site.
