Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, is a mix of African and European cultures. As a result of its Germanic colonial history and the mingling of races, Windhoek is rather diverse: there are all colors of skin to be seen, and different varieties of styles of clothes. Some people opt for western attire while other wear colorful, traditional robes and intricate hair styles; Herero women can be seen strolling in Victorian-style dresses next to men in western business suits. Its streets have distinctive German architecture. Cafés serve German delicacies.

Windhoek has a population of approximately two hundred thousand people, which is considerably tiny compared to global capital populations.   Unfortunately, this number is growing rapidly at present mostly due to a lack of employment in rural areas. Regardless of the increase in population over the last few years, the city itself is extremely clean, and mostly safe. The economy of Windhoek is reliant on clothing manufacturing and meat processing. In additions, Windhoek is one of the world’s major trade centers of Karakul sheep skins. Tourism is a growing industry and numerous tour services are available for safaris outside of Windhoek. The country has breathtaking landscape but also is less populated than other parts of Africa. Thus, many tourists begin in Windhoek and explore the country from there; Namibia recently received international acclaim when Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt chose this country as the birthplace of their first child.
