There are a variety of opinions about tipping in Egypt.  Some say that tipping is not expected and if you do not tip it will not affect the excellent service you receive.  That said, most Egyptian hotel workers receive approx £35 a month wages so tip if you receive good service. Keep in mind that a 'thank you' and a smile will get you a lot.

Others say that tipping, always graciously accepted, is very much a part of the culture and is expected by tour operators, waiters, concierges, drivers....  Coming from a non-tipping culture (Australia and UK) this can be a little tedious but realise that it is part of going to the touristy areas in any country.  The genuine kindness of the Egyptian people is truly impressive, and it is humbling to see the dignified manner in which Egyptian  workers conduct themselves, even when they have their hand out for a tip!
