Panama City has no shortage of history and culture related things to do and if possible, a visitor should plan on spending at least a week in order to experience the highlights. Taking a guided eco-tour through the city's Metropolitan Park is fascinating, not only for the exotic wildlife, but also because it is the only actual rainforest within a modern city. Taking a train ride on the world's first intercontinental railroad might be a fun excursion for history buffs and the like, as the 90 minute trip on the Panama Canal Railway inside a luxurious observation car provides visitors with a glimpse of Panama's past. Of course, most tourists make time to visit the Panama Canal, and visitors can head to Miraflores Locks to stand atop a viewing deck, and then take a tour of the attached museum for a $10 USD fee. History enthusiasts will also be pleased to discover that Panama City is rich with companies offering guided tours of the city and its most important landmarks, which date back to the 16th century after Panama was discovered by the spanish Conquistadors. The Amador Causeway also should not be missed if you can help it, as it offers a breathtaking backdrop of Panama City's skyline and the Panama Canal. Most either stroll down the mile-long Causeway or rent a bicycle for the day to ride while the ocean air whips by. Finally, if you happen to visit in mid-October, Panama City's fall festival is a charming event and showcases some of the most impressive horse breeds in the world.
