With its close proximity to the equator and year-round warm temperatures you might not plan on bringing clothes more suited to late winter in the upper Great Lakes of North America, but that’s what you’ll want to have with you if you decide to explore around Mt. Rinjani. This is the second highest volcanic peak in Indonesia, and is one of the infamous Ring of Fire, of Pacific volcanoes.
This is third largest volcano in Indonesia, and the first historical eruption occurred more than 150 years ago in 1847. Today it is a major tourist destination, where visitors can take in the volcano and the Segara Anak Crater Lake that was created from previous volcanic activity. This area was established as a national park in 1997 following small eruptions in 1994, 1995 and 1996, which created the small cone in the center of the caldera, where the lava flow entered the lake.
If you’re planning to visit the volcano the best time is the dry season from April to October. These sunny days and cool temperatures make for good climbing. If you’re camping out on the mountain, be sure to take warm clothing. Several companies provide tours of the volcano and it makes for a truly spectacular sight and is unlike anything you’ll see on the beaches of Lombok.
