Interlochen Center for the Arts is a world-famous arts education institution that was founded in 1928 by Dr. Joseph E. Maddy as the National Music Camp (later renamed Interlochen Arts Camp). Over the years it has evolved to include Interlochen Public Radio and Interlochen Arts Academy. Talented young people from around the world attend Interlochen to become more proficient as musicians, artists, dancers, actors, creative writers, or filmmakers. There are almost always performances or rehearsals taking place (although not much happens on Mondays), and visitors are always welcome on campus. Lodging is available, but it's very spartan and basic. There's also a snackbar and a cafeteria. Parking is free, and most student performances have a nominal admission charge. Transportation to and from Traverse City Airport is available for around $15 one-way. Interlochen State Park is right next door and is a great place to stay for those who like to camp (although it's extremely popular in the summer, so reservations are a good idea).
