San Diego is home to casual breakfasts by the beach. Here are some local favorites (by neighborhood):
Mission Beach:
The Mission, 3795 Mission Blvd, a few blocks north of Belmont Park, is a modern cafe with well-presented healthy dishes at affordable prices. The menu runs the gammut from the Banana Blackberry Pancakes for the sweettooth, to the Zen Breakfast, with scrampled egg whites, braised tofu, brown rice, and grilled veggies for the health nut. There is also a great selection of Latino Breakfast Plates and blended coffee drinks. The best part is once you've finished breakfast, you can just walk across the street and take a stroll down the Mission Beach boardwalk.
Pacific Beach:
Kono's Cafe, 704 Garnet Ave, located at the base of Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach (P.B.), serves the ultimate breakfast burrito. This surf cafe, which serves breakfast all day, is a favorite for locals and tourists alike. Don't let the line that often extends down Garnet Avenue dissuade you; their Breakfast Burrito #1, with a hearty portion of eggs, avocado, sausage, cheddar cheese, and hot sauce, is to die for. Plus, there is patio seating across the boardwalk so you can sit in the sun and watch the surfers by Crystal Pier.
Broken Yolk, 1851 Garnet Ave, is the ultimate spot for eggs. A local favorite, this place gets pretty crowded on the weekends. If you're in the mood for eggs and cheap, this is the place. Their menu must have over 50 egg dishes.
La Jolla:
The Living Room , 1010 Prospect Street , at the intersection of Prospect and Girard (2 main streets in downtown La Jolla), is great for their coffee, espresso drinks, pastries, and desserts, and their proximity to the great boutiques in La Jolla. They also have a great view of the Shores out their back window.Del Mar:
Americana, 1454 Camino Del Mar, where Camino Del Mar hits 15th Street, has a great brunch menu, with omelettes, eggs benedicts, and waffles. Order your coffee to go (or pickup a cup across the street at Starbucks) and take a walk along the beach, just a block away.
Hillcrest:
Hash House a Go Go, 3628 Fifth Avenue, is the place to go if you are looking for a BIG breakfast. Their theme is "twisted farm food", and they make sure you have enormous portions. Go early or be prepared to wait in a long line.
Cafe on Park, 3831 Park Avenue, is a small restaurant with delicious breakfasts. Fast service means that you generally don't have to wait too long for a seat, even when it's super busy. A good choice if you're planning on heading to the San Diego Zoo/Balboa Park afterwards.
Crest Cafe on Robinson in Hillcrest serves up hearty and healthy meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The breakfast offerings are outstanding - with highlights including creme brulee French toast, scramblers and omelets and Mexican influenced specialties.
