I lived in Cairo from 1980-1983 and since then I've been a regular visitor to the region. I particularly enjoy the desert, and given that the Nile Valley accounts for less than 10% of Egypt's total land mass I encourage travellers to do some desert travel when they are here.

In Cairo, I have a particular interest in the medieval city and it's great to see that money is finally being spent restoring some of the 450-odd buildings that still remain. I lead the occasional tour to Egypt and I lecture on Islamic art and architecture.
